These plaster casts of the original discovery are a ghastly reminder of what natural disaster?

Answer: The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius leading to the destruction of Pompeii. Dniesh, matti tapaninen, Krithi, Iam, Sribharath, and rajeev got it. Nicely done.

Eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The remains are of people buried by the ash at Pompeii.
