Question - 409

The two pictures were taken some years apart. The railroad car in the second picture was moved to align it to the exact same spot it is in in the first picture. On what occasions were the two pictures taken and why the insistence on the exact alignment?

Answer: The pictures show the armistice of WWI and WWII. During WWI, the Germans surrendered to Ferdinand Foch and the agreement was signed in his own railway carriage. Hitler, ever mindful of historical symbolism, insisted on reenacting the same scene when accepting the French surrender during WWII. Kaushik, Manix, anon, Iam, Raghu, Amresh, Ramji and Kamal Rathi got it. Well done.

Venues of the first and second armistice.

1st photo - This photograph was taken after reaching an agreement for the armistice that ended World War I. This is Ferdinand Foch's own railway carriage and the location is in the forest of Compiègne. Foch is second from the right.

2nd - Hitler (hand on side) staring at the statue of Foch before signing the armistice at Compiègne, France (25 June 1940)

The first picture is of the Armistice, at the end of WWI, marking the defeat of Germany. The second takes place in the same carriage when France surrenders to Germany, during WWII (1940).

WW 1 armistice was signed in this car at Compiegne in 1918.
In 1940, the victorious Germans made the french to sign the surrender in the same location.

First picture was taken on armstice day (eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918) which marked the end of world war I. Germany signed an agreement with the allies in this railroad car. The second picture (i guess) refers to when Germans attacked France at the onset of WWII and moved the car back to its original place to demand an armstice.

The location is Compiegne, France. The first shows the signing of the armstice that ended the first World War with the defeat of Germany.
Hitler chose the same spot to sign the armstice when Germany defeated France in 1940.
