smoke on top of Sistine Chapel to indicate if a vote was conclusive in electing a new pope (white) or inconclusive (black)

The white smoke signifies that a new pontiff has been selected and the black smoke means that the deliberations are still going on to select the next pope.

Smoke from burning ballots coming out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

White smoke - A new Pope has been elected by the Cardinals

Black smoke - No decision about the successor has been made

When John Paul I was elected in 1978 (Year of the Three Popes), the (white) smoke came out gray accidentally.
