Question - 86

Identify the two men in the first visual and connect them to the second visual. Think literature.

Update: The question might have been too hard as originally stated. I have added a hint and will let it stay for another day.

Answer: The first visual shows Herge, the creator of Tintin and Chang Chong Chen. Chen introduced Herge to various foreign cultures and made Tintin a more politically aware cartoon. The second visual shows the infamous Mukden incident which features in the Tintin comics "Blue lotus" a scene from which is shown in the third visual. Swapnaa's comment has more information. Iam, Swapnaa, Manix, Ramji, Hirak and Rajesh got it. Well done.

1. Tintin's creator Herge, Herge's wife and Chang Chong-jen. Chang was Herge's artist friend who inspired the Chinese boy character in The Blue Lotus.
2. The Mukden Incident: sabotage of Janapese-owned railway lines in China which led to the Sino-Japanese War and later the Civil War. This is when Chang had to return to China and lost contact with Herge for many decades. He was actually made to work as a street sweeper (maybe Ayn Rand uses his story for inspiration in her book Anthem!) thanks to the f*$&#&^ Cultural Revolution. Ah, the evils of extreme politics! :(
3. A scene from the Blue Lotus

PS: There is a happy ending to this story. Chang eventually returned to France and spent Herge's last 2 years with him. :)

Georges Prosper Remi (Hergé) and Zhang Chongren.

Zhang's discussions with Hergé about China in that period, helped Hergé to write/draw "The Blue Lotus".

The Mukden Incident was depicted in the Blue Lotus.

Herge and Zhang Chongren.

Zhang was the inspiration for the Chang-Chong-Chen character in Tintin.

The Blue Lotus also depicts the Mukden incident of the China-Japan war (second picture).
