Question - 54

Today's question is courtesy Hirak. The banner holders were planning to do something to the Xs but the police wouldn't let them. So they settled for throwing the Xs, mops, girdles, pots, pans and playboy magazines which were "instruments of female torture" according to them into garbage bins. Identify X, what they were planning to do to X and connect with the picture.

Answer: X is Bra and they were planning to burn it prompting the press to name these protesters "Bra Burners". Sica, Mekhala, Manix, Iam, Adi, Rajeev, Keshav, Rajesh and Ashwin got it. Well done.

X = Bra

Protestors were planning to burn bras. Press labeled them 'bra burners'.

X = beauty contests

They probably wanted to make it like a cattle auction instead of a beauty pageant. Hence, the images of women as cattle/meat.

bras, burning (they wanted to burn all things in the garbage bin too)

pictre: Protest happened at the 1968 Miss America pageant, although 'no bras were actually burnt' acc. to one of the protest organizers.

Burn the Bras, of course :-) The women's lib protests at the 1969 Miss America pageant, Atlantic City, NJ! They were planning to burn the bras along with other "objects of female oppression" (now I understand why a certain freedom loving gentleman wants to go commando all the time!), but had to resort to dumping them in Freedom Trash cans so as to not break any fire hazard laws.

Great question, by the way!

Here's more interesting information:

The protesters argued that the Miss America contest declared that the most important thing about a woman is how she looks by parading women around like cattle (reason for the cattle reference in posters) to show off their physical attributes. All women were made to believe they were inferior because they couldn't measure up to Miss America beauty standards. Women's liberation would "attack the male chauvinism, commercialization of beauty, racism and oppression of women symbolized by the Pageant."
The Atlanta City convention center opens onto a vast boardwalk between it and the beach. The large expanse of boards easily seen from the entrance makes it a great place for demonstrations. Women's liberation took advantage of this to stage several guerilla theater actions. A live sheep was crowned Miss America. Women sang songs that parodied the contest and the idea of selling women's bodies: "Ain't she sweet; making profits off her meat." A tall, Miss America puppet was auctioned off.

Breast Redundant Accessory (B.R.A)
The Feminists were planning to burn it @ the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City,
along with other symbols of oppression and degradation of women

In Cost per Material used they stand as the unquestionable winners, over other garments, inspite of their questionable functionality

One more reason to burn them

This picture shows protesters opposing the Miss (the blacked out word) America contest in the 60's. They were planning to burn X's, but they could not; so they threw X's along with other instruments of female torture into garbage bins. X is bra.
