Question - 499

What is this?

Answer: This is a political cartoon parodying the redrawing of legislative districts in Massachusetts during an election in 1812 to align more favorably with party affiliations. Its resemeblence to a salamander made the cartoonist term it a gerrymander and the name stuck. Kamal Rathi, Ameya, Akshay, anon, Matti Tapaninen, Vetti, Jamie (you must have known the etymology too, right?), anon and Kr!sh got it. Well done.

GERRYMANDERING

The outline of one of these districts was thought to resemble a salamander. A satirical cartoon by Elkanah Tisdale appeared in the Boston Gazette; it graphically transformed the districts into a fabulous animal, “The Gerry-mander,” fixing the term in the popular imagination.

Gerrymandering, a form of boundary redistricting in which electoral district or constituency boundaries are deliberately modified for electoral purposes, thereby producing a contorted or unusual shape. The resulting district is known as a gerrymander. In this 1812 Political cartoon the state is Massachusetts
