A is a storm glass invented by Admiral Robert FitzRoy (in the stamp)
and B is the Tempest Prognosticator invented by Mr. Merryweather who used Leeches to detect storms (the theme). Leeches interestingly are hermaphrodites like the one shown in the statue.

Tempest Prognosticator is the object which uses the Leech and is therefore also known as the Leech Barometer

Canary Coal Mines

The connect is Animal Sentinels.
There is increasing recognition that wild, domestic, and companion animals may act as "sentinels" for environmental health hazards by providing early warning of human health hazards in the environment. Animals can act as sentinels because they may be more susceptible or have greater exposure to a particular hazard compared to humans living nearby.

A: Storm glass
B: Tempest prognosticator
C: Mine canary

These are inventions that attempt to predict extreme weather?

Shiva - what's the deal with the cartoon? And I don't even want to attempt to connect the leech to the statue :-)
