Though they can all be connected as US political symbols, the particular connect I was looking for was that they were all drawn by Thomas Nast, the legendary US cartoonist. He is partly responsible for the now familiar depiction of Santa Claus as a bearded rotund man. Santa Claus was the famous missing item I was looking for.
