Question - 151

Connect the map on the left to the visuals on the right.

Answer: The connect is the Iditarod trail Sled dog race which commemorates the courageous 1925 serum run to Nome. The map shows the trail, the statue is that of Balto, a sled dog who delivered the serum in the last leg of the journey and Todd Palin is a 4-time champion of the Tesoro Iron dog competition the route of which follows large parts of the trail. Maybe the Palin connect is a bit of a stretch and it pushed a lot of people in slightly wrong directions. Apologies for that. Also, another perfectly valid Todd Palin connect would have been that the race originated in Wasilla which is where the Palins are from. Swapnaa, Raghu and Rajesh were bang on while Sinndhuja, Arvind, Divya and Iam were thereabouts. Well done.

3: Legend has it that Balto, an Alaskan Husky sled dog which was instrumental in carrying medicines to combat diphtheria in Nome, AL (1925), inspired the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
1: Map of the Iditarod race track shows the checkpoints between Anchorage and Nome and the positions of the active racers and leaders as of race day 9 (yes, the damn race has the dogs running for about 12 days!).
2: Sarah and Todd Palin are from Wasilla, the head quarters of the Iditarod.

The map is of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the statue (in Central Park, NYC) is of Balto, the sled dog, that led the "1925 serun run" which is commemorated by the race.

Todd Palin (seen with Sarah) is a 4-time champion of the snowmobile version of the Iditarod called the Tesoro Iron Dog race.

Tesoro Iron Dog/ Iditarod Race is the connect.
Todd Palin won it. Thats a map of the race route.
And that's an...ahem...Iron Dog.

Balto, the heroic wolf-dog, route of the dog-sled championship held in alaska, and finally, the disgraceful sarah palin and her husband.

Balto, in 1925, along with a team of dogs and mushers, relayed much needed antitoxins for diptheria to the city of Nome, Alaska, when all other modes of modes of transportation (including trains and planes) could not reach Nome.

The story is quite amazing, and if anyone's interested, they can read it here: http://palemaleirregulars.blogspot.com/2008/09/wednesday-miscellany-balto-prairie.html

Oh, and the link to Sarah Palin is that in 2003, she actually had the nerve to ask for permission to hunt down wolves from the air, so that moose and caribou populations could be increased, in order to support subsistence food gatherers and hunters.

Awesome question Dinky. The story of Balto is almost as if from a fairy tale!

Bridge to nowhere in Alaska

Oh, i was so captivated by Balto's story that i didn't pay enough attention to sarah palin.

Rather, than what i mentioned in my previous most, this seems like another possible connect:

"I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim March 3-10, 2007, as:
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Week
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to join me in celebrating “The Last Great Race on Earth.” ??

I don't mean to spam this Dinky, but one thing led to another, and I could not stop reading about Sarah Palin. And i am just reading this that her husband, Todd Palin, was the 2007 iron dog-race winner, and sarah was complaining that global warming was causing some inconvenience to her husband in pursuing his hobby.

This link is hilarious:

Iditarod trail. The Iditarod trail committee is located in Wasilla and Sarah Palin is a former mayor of Wasilla. Todd Palin has won the Teroso Iron Dog race which follows parts of Iditarod trail. Balto and the 1925 Serum run.
