Question -134

The two maps are from two different eras and represent different things and are obviously correlated. Identify them and the reason for the correlation. This question is courtesy Manix.

Answer: The first visual shows in blue the counties that voted for Barack Obama in the recent presidential elections while the second shows the production of cotton in the same areas from the Civil war area. The strong correlation shows that most African Americans who were employed in the cotton plantations have settled down in the same areas and they voted for Obama in the elections. Iam, Harish, Mekie, Raghu and Swapnaa got it right. Well done.

Correlation between cotton picking and presidential elections 2008

Blue is areas where Obama won and corresponds to settlements of African-Americans involved in cotton picking.

Red is McCain territory

Per county cotton production and voting patterns for Barack Obama in the South.. shows strong correlation assuming the Afro American population was all involved in the cotton production... also shows lack of immigration of these sections of population over all these years...

Bottom: The cotton belt in the South where African Americans worked as slaves in the cotton fields before the American Civil War.
Top: This region voted Democratic in the recent presidential elections.

Correlation is African Americans who still live close to the cotton belt and who voted overwhelmingly for Obama.

Maps showing counties that voted for Obama (in blue) in 2008 and the Civil War Era map of cotton producing areas. The correlation implies the strong African-American support for Obama.

#2: Map of cotton plantations (and hence of black slave laborers)
#1: Map of African American population concentration (something to do with how many black folks voted for Obama?)

My guess - the first visual is the map of counties and parishes (in LA) that were for slavery (highest representation in blue). The connect would be the relation betwenn production of cotton and the erstwhile slaves - dunno if it is politically correct though- that primarily picked cotton that is shown in the second visual.
