Question - 144

The person in the visual is a Pulitzer winning American cartoonist. He is most famous for a series of cartoons which feature a common theme that is now named after him. The visual in the top right shows a contest revolving around this theme while the bottom two visuals are popular instances of this theme. Identify all the visuals and their connections to the theme/person.

Answer: The person is Rube Goldberg whose cartoons featured extremely complicated machines to perform some really simple tasks. Such machines have come to be named after him. The contest is essentially to build such machines. Tom & Jerry cartoons feature several such machines. Honda had a famous ad campaign where a Rube Goldberg machine is built from various car parts to start the car. See the comments for more information/very interesting links. Iam, Divya, Arvind, Raghu, Anshul, Kr!sh, Swapnaa, Manix, Hirak, Rajesh and Ashwin got it. Well done.

Don't you think this dude - Heath Robinson deserves it as much as, if not, more than Rube Goldberg?

He was elder to Goldberg too

Happy Trippin ...

The connect is Rube Goldberg machines. The visuals are Rube Goldberg, a national contest organized by the Phi Chapter of Theta Tau, the National Professional Engineering Fraternity at Purdue University, Honda Accord had an advertisement on the theme called the Cog ad, Tom (of Tom & Jerry) designing a RG machine to trap Jerry.

Rube Goldberg

2nd visual - depiction
4th - Tom has a Rube Goldberg thingy to catch Jerry.
3rd - Honda had that famous ad which involved the machine.

You could have added the machine from Apoorva Sagodharargal ( Appu Raja? in Hindi ) in which the dwarf Kamalhassan uses that machine to kill one of the villians.

What a fun question! This is Rube Goldberg, known for his exciting imagination in creating complex devices to do silly things. The contest is the RG Machine contest. I think the Honda car refers to the brilliant ad that features Honda parts that set off a chain reaction and make the car roll out of the garage (my favourite part being the wind shield wipers!). Tom & Jerry cartoons show several RGMs either designed by Tom to capture Jerry or designed by Jerry to thrash Tom.

And happy holidays to you too!

Rude Goldberg... building a complex machine that makes something simple. Honda came out with an ad using the concept for the Accord, and Tom seems to be conjuring up an obscure way to get his feast
