Question - 108

The three visuals on the left are examples of a certain phenomenon (the two skeletons are from two different species). The visual on the right is connected to the most famous fictional representation of this phenomenon. Identify all visuals and the phenomenon.

Answer: The skeletons are those of the Elephant bird, moa and dodo (all extinct). These birds are classic examples of island gigantism - a phenomenon where species grow to a very large size due to lack of natural predators in a closed island environment. This concept was extended to fanciful lengths in the King Kong movies. The map on the right is that of Skull island where almost all creatures and plants suffer from island gigantism. Mekie, Rajesh, Divya and Iam got it. Well done.

Elephant bird (Madagascar), Moa (New Zealand), Dodo (Mauritius) and a map of Skull Island (from King Kong) - these represent the phenomenon of island gigantism, although it's a little exaggerated in King Kong's case.

Examples of island gigantism - Animals in isolated places grow to a very large size due to lack of predators/competition. The most famous fictional representation is the Skull Island of the movie King Kong.
I just returned from the Museum of Natural History in DC, where I read this exact story with all these exhibits just an hour ago!! :)
