Question - 48

Today's question is courtesy Mekhala. Identify the significance of the photo on the right and if possible the individuals as well. The visual on the left is a clue towards identifying them.

Answer: The people on the right were the so called "Traitorous Eight". They left Shockley semiconductors to form Fairchild semiconductors whose spinoff companies eventually created the Silicon valley (shown in the first visual). Rajeev, QoD, Ramji, Ashwin, Adi and Rajesh got it. Well done.

Silicon Valley (the original one) start-ups.

The group on the right are Freescale Semiconductors alumni, who went on to found much of those (now Fortune 100) companies.

Left is silicon valley

Right is the traitorous eight,

they left shockley semiconductor labs because it decided to stop research on silicon transisters and founded Fairchild Semiconductors (both in Silicon valley). A few years after they founded it, some of the original members left to start up some of the famous silicon valley companies which includes Intel.

The picture on the right is of the founders of Fairchild Semiconductors, one of the first people to start mass production of semiconductor ICs, which led to the silicon valley (on the left)
