Question - 30

Connect the visuals.

Answer: The connect is "Heart of darkness" by Joseph Conrad. The first visual is the Roi des Belges, the raft in which Conrad went up the Congo river. The second is the Nigerian author Chinua Achebe who wrote a wonderfully thoughtful piece on the racist views expressed in the novel. The third is T.S.Eliot whose "Hollow Men" ends with a reference to the novel. The fourth is the poster of "Apocalypse now", a movie based on the novel. In fact, Marlon Brando quotes from "Hollow Men" in the movie. Mekhala and Rajesh cracked it as did the team Iam, imitator and manix. Well done.

Heart of Darkness, the novel
(L to R):
Roi des Belges (the ship that traverses river Congo in the novel)

Chinua Achebe (an African novelist who considered the novel to be racist)

TS Eliot who used 'Mistah Kurtz - he dead' from the novel as the epigraph in his poem 'The Hollow Men'

Marlon Brando as Col. Kurtz in the film adaptation (loosely) 'Apocalypse Now' (who also recites Eliot's poem to his followers)

Connection: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

The first picture is that of Roi des Belges, the ship on which Conrad traveled the Congo river. The person in the second picture is Chinua Achebe who criticized Conrad of being a racist. T.S.Eliot used the quotation "Mistah Kurtz - he dead" in his poem The Hollow Men and the last picture is a poster of Apocalypse Now which is based on that book.
