Question - 1

Connect the visuals to a literary work. Some of the visuals connect more directly to the theme than others.

Answer: Lord of the flies. The pig's head is from a central scene in the novel. The second visual is Beelzebub, another name for Satan and one that translates literally as "lord of the flies". The guy is Stephen king whose novels feature the fictional town of Castle rock, Maine. This is named after a geographical feature in the novel. The logo is that of Castle rock entertainments which takes its name from Stephen king's novels. The south park episode is the "Wacky molestation adventure" which parodies the book.

Hirak, Trevor, Mekhala and Anurag got it. Well done. There were 8 comments to be moderated but only 6 showed up when I published them. My apologies for the 2 commentators whose comments got lost. I have no idea why it happened.

Many people expressed enthusiasm for making this a group thing where every one can post questions. We can nominate a quizmaster who can be in charge of the questions for the entire week. Also, I am thinking of updating the blog with a new question every night (say around 1 am). So look for a fresh question every morning. If enough people don't take a shot at a question, I might delay the update. Let me know if you have any comments and suggestions.

The pighead-on-a-stick strongly suggests William Golding's "Lord of the Flies"; in fact, I believe it's from the 1963 film adaptation. The South Park picture is from the episode entitled "The Wacky Molestation Adventure," which parodies that book.

I have no idea what the other pictures indicate. Gargoyles? What's the film company with the lighthouse logo? Is the guy with glasses Al Franken?

Connect is 'Lord of the Flies' - the pig head is the main clue (although Hog's Head leads to Harry Potter). On googling, i saw that Stephen King used the name Castle Rock (from Lord of the Flies) as the setting of his book 'The Dead Zone'. In turn, the Castle Rock Entertainment group (of Time Warner Co) was named in 'honor' of 'The Dead Zone', as a King novel was made into a successful movie, 'Stand By Me'. The person in the photo is Stephen King. Finally, the other picture is that of the Lord of the Flies himself, Beelzebub.

I think this was left out...
Smiley Town episode of South Park draws upon both Lord of the Flies and Children of the Corn (a Stephen King novel).

Lord of the flies is my guess based on the pig's head

I think a group thing will be great. As you said, nominating a quizmaster for the week will work well too.
