Question - 465

The pictures show two of the most famous events of this kind. Identify the events.

Answer: The answer I was looking for was the "Last Spike" - an event marking the end of construction of a railway when they get some celebrity to drive the last spike in. The two visuals show the construction of Grand Trunk Pacific railway and the Canadian Pacific railway. Mohan Phadnis, Nemani, Jaggi, Adi, Krithi, Matti Tapaninen and hotmanoj got it. Well done.

The first picture is the "Last Spike" ceremony for the GTPR (Grand Trunk Pacific Railway) held at Fort Fraser, British Columbia on April 7, 1914.

The second picture is the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) Last Spike ceremony for Canada's first transcontinental railroad, held on November 7, 1885.

Driving the Last Spike.
1.The greatest historical event in transportation occurred at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, as the Union Pacific tracks joined those of the Central Pacific Railroad.
2.Donald Smith, later known as Lord Strathcona, drives the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway, at Craigellachie, November 7, 1885.

Dunno the name but are the events where teams compete to finish a mile of railroad tracks first? The pics look like the finals where there are numerous spectators who were initially competitors.
